This will not be one that I buy. It has one really terrific thing going for it: the story. The story is excellent, compelling and fascinating. But that's all that's wonderful about it.
I did not like the artwork a single bit. I hope it doesn't start some sort of new faddish trend in anime. I believe they used the drybrush technique. That technique has it's place in the art world but I don't care for it in anime. This anime looks like it was drawn with chalk on rough paper by children. Very few outlines are closed and few if any areas are completely colored.
All the voices are OK except for James Caan who, with his harsh Bronx accent is completely inappropriate in any anime. I like his work but not here.

I think it's so sweet that Isao Takahata wanted the audience to feel comforted by the ending song, which was stated in an extra on the DVD of him and a few members of the cast at a banquet/convention. Впрочем, японским волшебным детям подавай ещё больше экзотики: они предпочитают появляться на свет из персиков или бамбука. Именно в бамбуке нашли Кагую тысячу лет назад – сказание о ней возникло аж в X веке. Десять лет от режиссёра-сценариста-продюсера Исао Такахаты не было ни слуху ни духу. Если же считать за его предыдущую работу не участие в короткометражном сборнике «Зимние дни», а собственную полнометражку «Мои соседи Ямада», то и вовсе четырнадцать. «Сказание о принцессе Кагуе» должно было выйти параллельно с прощальным поклоном другого сооснователя студии Ghibli – лентой «Ветер крепчает» Хаяо Миядзаки. Такой синхронности у Такахаты с Миядзаки не случалось четверть века (со времён «Могилы светлячков» и «Моего соседа Тоторо»)… но в последний момент планы поменялись, и «Сказание» слегка задержалось. Тоже неплохо – благодаря этому обе картины были номинированы на «Оскар». Увы, жадная Киноакадемия не дала золотого болванчика ни одной из них. Миядзаки щедро вплёл в свою биографическую драму сказочность. Такахата поступил наоборот: его экранизация легенды в первую очередь историческая драма, а уж потом сказка. Да, чудес здесь много: удивительные находки в бамбуковых зарослях, рост ребёнка не по дням, а по часам, смешение снов с реальностью и целый божественный десант. Однако обстановка играет ключевую роль – эдакая энциклопедия жизни периода Хэйан, напоминающая «Записки у изголовья» и «Рассказы среднего государственного советника Цуцуми». В частности, на ум приходит рассказ «Любительница гусениц» о девушке-аристократке Химэгими, которая нарушала обычаи направо и налево: не чернила зубы, не брила брови, не покрывала лицо густым слоем белил, ибо «полагала, что всё неестественное в человеке достойно осуждения». Но самым экстравагантным в ней было то, что пока остальные любовались цветами и бабочками, она рьяно увлекалась изучением гусениц. В наше время девушка, вероятно, стала бы натуралистом и «естественницей» – а в своё была чудачкой и объектом насмешек. Хаяо Миядзаки, вдохновлявшийся Химэгими при создании образа Навсикаи из Долины Ветров, признавался, что в детстве всерьёз переживал за дальнейшую судьбу любительницы гусениц, ведь среди царства условностей и запретов та могла сложиться печально, даже несмотря на богатство, высокий статус и родительскую любовь. Кагуя не обладала стойкостью, присущей Химэгими. Вдобавок Кагуя знала и любила другую жизнь. Такахата показал героиню волшебной птичкой, попавшей в золотую клетку, параллель очевидна в сцене с вручением подарков. Казалось бы: собственная усадьба в столице, драгоценности, шелка, знатные ухажёры – что ещё нужно для счастья? Но Кагуя призналась своему приёмному отцу: «Счастье, которое вы мне желали, было тяжело вынести». «Сказание», как и «Ветер», способно вызвать слёзы. Финалы двух фильмов отчасти схожи – недаром полнолуние пришлось на 15 августа, последний день фестиваля усопших Бон. Впрочем, в послевкусии опять-таки вылезают противоположности. Раз Такахата обратился к буддизму, вот подходящий термин из оного – «упадана». Плюс вращающееся колесо сансары присутствует и в сюжете, и в песнях. Равно как и неоднозначный для не-буддистов вопрос: что лучше – земная жизнь с пёстрой палитрой радостей и горестей или однотонная бесстрастная нирвана? Кстати, с музыкальным сопровождением связан любопытный контраст: когда играет ансамбль божеств (композиция так и называется – Tennin no Ongaku, то бишь «Небесные музыканты»), тело хочет пуститься в весёлый пляс, а душа испытывает парализующую боль из-за того, что под эту музыку творится. Композитор Дзё Хисаиши традиционно на высоте! Помимо замечательного саудтрека, дарящего радость не менее щедро, чем грусть, в фильме есть семейно-дружеская теплота, весёлый юмор с «домомучительницей» и ехидная сатира с аристократами. Студия Ghibli держит марку – в одной ленте успевает продемонстрировать не краткий комиксный квест, а насыщенный пласт жизни. Воистину сказание. Легенда тысячелетней давности по сей день отзывается эхом: идеи из неё почерпнули разнообразные жанры – махо-сёдзё («Сейлор Мун»), сёнен («Наруто»), космическая фантастика («Королева тысячелетия»). Причём в каждом преломлении она выглядит иначе. Вот и Исао Такахата пересказал историю на свой лад, убавил одно, добавил другое. Его вариант получился грустно-прощальным – и сказочно красивым.

Omg yesss this is one of my favourite SG films and it always annoyed me that only 2 of their films wernt in english (the other being ocean waves) but this is the one i love. arrghh so happy they finally deceided to release this in english (and how did i not know about this sooner. Looks great, although would like to see some Ghibli stuff out of its tried and tested mould. (Young boy/girl meets young girl/boy. goes on charming adventure etc. Time and time again, we learn that the simpler we make things, the more enduring and beautiful the outcome. This film goes back to the old way of animation - good ol' hand-drawn images, and it delivers the punch needed to floor any family member. Yes, this is a family film that'll bring tears to everyone's eyes. Granted, it is not quite as beautiful (and sad) as Grave of the Fireflies, but it not far behind in terms of it's sentimental storyline and lead child characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, especially the unpredictable ending. I usually stay away from fairytale infused Japanese films, but this one is an exception well worth the 2 hours. I would recommend listening to the original Japanese audio, not the American dub version.
